Barack Obama has said that he would rather be a good one-term president than a moderate two-term one. And watching the State of the Union address, I’d say he was doing a really good job at realising that wish, or at least the “one term” part of it.

Obama devotes a little of the speech to saying he is not naive, that he didn’t expect it to be easy to carry out all that he wanted when he got to the White House. But his very address was in itself naive. He is absolutely right to harp on about the childish and relentlessly political tactics of the Republicans in Congress. It is dreadful for ordinary Americans that the opposition is intent on saying no to absolutely everything, even the matters they agree with. But there is no chance that will change by Obama and the Democrats calling attention to it.

Do the Democrats really think that the American people will blame the Republicans at this year’s mid-term elections for Obama failing to carry out his campaign promises of change? Of course not. It is the Democrats that still have handy majorities in both houses of Congress. Republicans will simply say they obstructed policies that the American people did not want…
