45929455 fire afp A Tiananmen in Tehran?

Eyewitness: Iranian militiamen shot 300 rounds during Monday’s protest.  Iran’s Guardian Council offered a partial recount of the presidential vote Tuesday as pressure mounted from the biggest rally since the revolution, in which eight were killed.

An Iranian journalist who witnessed the shooting told the Monitor that, in fact, the gunmen were plain-clothed basiji militia in riot helmets and body armor who fired an estimated 300 bullets from a rooftop – roughly half into the air, and the other half directly into the crowd, over the course of an hour.

The guy shooting from the roof was very calm, not like he was shooting at people,” said the witness. The ideological militiamen, who operate under the auspices of the Revolutionary Guards, fired as if “they were just trying to empty their guns into the ground, very cool, very relaxed.”

The resulting images of protesters with green armbands carrying away their dead comrades – with looks of horror on their faces and shouts for help on their lips – evoked the prolonged bloody protests that shook Iran before the 1979 revolution.

What is also outrageous here is that the European Union is taking a stronger stance on this than The United States.  The European Commission issued a statement saying the deaths of the protesters are deplorable.  Obama, the so-called leader of the ‘free-world,’ offered much less:

I am deeply troubled by the violence that I’ve been seeing on television.

This guy can’t be serious?  If what Obama knows of this situation comes only from what he has seen on television, then God help us all.  Men are laying down their lives in the name of freedom and this is all he’s got?  Obviously, the ‘free-world’ has no leader at the present moment.

Obama is wise - he’s thinking not of the next week or two, but of the next 4 years of having to deal with whomever comes out on top in Iran. I’m sure that the Ayatollah (and the rest of the world) already knows that Obama would prefer to deal with Moussavi than with Ahm…nedad. Nothing Obama says at this point would make a difference. We’ve been issuing ultimatums at Iran for years, and that’s done nothing but hurt us and our foreign policy. Obama knows better.

Americans must resist their imperialist urge to constantly shove their noses into international affairs that do not concern them. Their self-appointed “policeman of the free world” role does nothing besides stir enmity abroad and inflate the American ego. A rational person should take comfort in the fact that finally, in Obama, there may be a leader who sees the flaw in this mentality.

The American government can do nothing to assist the peaceful opposition in Iran at this moment. Obama’s statement offered as much direct encouragement to the uprising as could be offered without allowing Ahmadi to brand the protests as a US-backed plot to topple Iranian sovereignty. This is of utmost importance.

WRONG - the so-called ‘leader of the free-world’ could at least verbally side with and encourage the fight for freedom - show the rest of the world America still stands on principle - ‘not meddling’ is NOT leadership - this guy, Obama, has proven time and again he is not the man for the job

Obama is wise in not meddling. It’s not our place.

If Obama says anything supporting the protesters, he would be playing directly into the Iranian government’s hand. They are eager to portray the dissidents as influenced by (or even puppets of)a meddling US government. If Obama made strong statements in their favor, he would be playing directly into Ahmedinejad’s hand.

I agree with Sherry & others - obama is correct in not giving fuel to the extreamist regime in Tehran.
US (or most other “western” or US Empire) meddling would condemn the protesters to a swift & brutal death!! Please read wikipedia on iran history to see how ‘53 US coup and US backing IRAQ in IRAN - IRAQ war means that US now has no place to meddle.

Especialy just after the gaza slaughter!
I say this all with reference to the governments, not the people of the contries - my Australian goverment is just as bad.

I’m disappointed, it is an American principle ever since our founding that we are dedicated to the principle that all are created equal and the fact is they have the right to free elections and to select their leadership.

People are being killed and beaten in the streets of Tehran and all over Iran, and we should stand up for them. The way we stood up for the Polish workers in Gdansk, the way we stood up for the people of then Czechoslovakia in the Prague Spring and we have stood up for freedom in every part of the world. We’re not doing that.

He didn’t say anything and they still accuse of meddling. This just proves, it doesn’t matter. They hate us no matter what we do. Quit with all this America is imperialist. Obama should always expouse the virtues of freedom, that is what the LEADER of the free world does, he obviously does not have the chops to be a leader.
