Attorney: Abortion Doctor George Tiller Killed at Church

Sunday Paper - May 31st, 2009

Late-term abortion doctor George Tiller (pictured above with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius), a prominent advocate for abortion rights wounded by a protester more than a decade ago, was shot and killed Sunday at his church in Wichita, his attorney said.
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius had long lasting and lucrative ties to Tiller.
Donations Tiller and his allies made to then-Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and her political action committee became a point of controversy during her nomination as secretary of Health and Human Services.
Tiller, 67, had repeatedly been the target of protests over his work. He had been shot once before, while at his clinic in 1993. The clinic was also bombed in 1996, and was severely vandalized earlier this month, according to an AP report.
Tiller’s donations to Sebelius, and the governor’s backing of abortion rights, rallied anti-abortion activists to oppose her nomination as health secretary, but she was confirmed by the Senate by a vote of 65 to 31 in April.
Sebelius had told Congress about $12,450 in donations Tiller made to her campaigns for insurance commissioner, but she initially omitted $23,000 in gifts he and his clinic made to her PAC.
Sebelius also drew criticism from anti-abortion activists for hosting Tiller and his staff at a reception at the governor’s mansion in 2007. Aides to Sebelius said the event was not intended as an honor for Tiller, but was hosted solely because he was the highest bidder at an auction sponsored by a Kansas women’s group.
The following is reaction from two prominet pro-life leaders:
Anti-abortion activist Randall Terry of Operation Rescue responded to Tiller’s death by issuing a statement in which he wrote: “George Tiller was a mass-murderer. We grieve for him that he did not have time to properly prepare his soul to face God. I am more concerned that the Obama Administration will use Tiller’s killing to intimidate pro-lifers into surrendering our most effective rhetoric and actions. Abortion is still murder. And we still must call abortion by its proper name, murder.”
The president of Operation Rescue, Troy Newman, commented that “Operation Rescue has worked tirelessly on peaceful, non-violent measures to bring him to justice through the legal system, the legislative system […] Mr. Tiller was an abortionist. But this wasn’t personal. We are pro life, and this act was antithetical to what we believe. Our prayers go out to his family and the thousands of people this will impact.” The group also stated “We denounce vigilantism and the cowardly act that took place this morning.”

Totally inappropriate commentary in view of an unlawful murder of an innocent man. Shame, shame, shame.

Karma. My heart does not bleed for Tiller, but murder is never justifiable.
