Protests Precede G20 as Capitalism is Threatened

Sunday Paper - March 29th, 2009
Leftist world leaders were in Chile this weekend for discussions on how to craft an effective global response to resolve the current financial crisis. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and U.S. Vice President Joe Biden were two of 200 senior policymakers participating in the conference held at Chile’s Pacific coast resort, Vina del Mar. This was the meeting to discuss the upcoming meeting, as the G20 summit will take place this week in London.
As Brown called for a global solution to a global problem, he did have a few humbling moments over the weekend. The first was when Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet gave him a quick lesson in economics, commenting to Brown:
“I would say that because of our decision during … the good times in copper prices, we decided to save some of the money for the bad times and I would say that policy today is producing good results.”
While in Brazil, Brown’s plea for a $100 billion rescue package for international trade yielded scouring remarks from President Luiz Inacio Lula da Sivla, who quickly reminded Brown who the culprits were. As Brown returned to New York, it was Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek who ripped Obama’s economic direction, labeling it “the way to hell.”
Elsewhere in the world, people are outraged as they world like to see world leaders adopt more fiscally responsible economic policies. All across Europe - Frankfurt, London, Paris, and Vienna - tens of thousands took to streets in protest. In Germany, there were huge protests in both Berlin and the banking capital of Frankfurt, the slogan du jour: “We won’t pay for your financial crisis.” Those in Berlin were more demonstrative, with protesters styling headbands reading “pay for it yourselves” and a group carrying a black coffin with roses on top symbolizing what they said was the end of capitalism. In Vienna, it was the same theme with the same “We won’t pay for your crisis” and one fresh one, “Capitalism can’t be reformed.”
Trying to calm the people and ease the tension prior to the commencement of the G20 summit was Joe Biden:
“I would hope that the protesters give us a chance, listen to what we have to say and hopefully we can make it clear to them that we’re going to walk away from this G20 meeting with some concrete proposals,” Biden said at a news conference after a meeting of center-left politicians in Chile.
Biden added: “I would say to the protesters that unless we talk, unless we attempt to deal with this changed circumstance we find ourselves in, there is no solution. Things will only get worse.”
Let us all be hopeful that world leaders will wake up and see the dangers posed from a system whereby only the losses are socialized. They must realize that the answer is less government tinkering, not more. The benefits of free market capitalism must be remembered. The prosperity of Americans, and individuals of any other nations that have embraced capitalism over the years have to remain the ideal. Living standards around the world have never been so high. Moving the world’s top 20 economic nations, collectively to the left, would derail things further, and we might never dig ourselves out of this downturn.
Richard Lambert, director of the Confederation of British Industry, reminded everyone last week that since 1989, when most nations of the world moved to capitalism, 500 million people left poverty in their rear-view mirror. When deciding on economic policies, one should look no further than Korea. The communist country of North Korea is hell on earth, destitute with people literally starving to death. Just below, is South Korea, where free market capitalism has produced a nation that has allowed individuals to prosper.
The leftists (liberals, socialists, Marxists, communists) have been having their way, propagating class warfare, and demonizing the economic producers. The pervasive attitude has been “eat the rich.” Perhaps the leftists won’t be happy until there are no more “rich” standing. Then, as it’s said to happen in North Korea, we can “eat the poor,” literally.
