Conservative at the Core

Sunday Paper - November 30th, 2008
Introduction
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.” Edmund Burke, the 18th century British political writer, regarded as the philosophical founder of Anglo-American conservatism, shared that view. Saying more eloquently, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”
As conservatives, we stand for something. We are traditionalists, holding established institutions in the highest regard. Faith and family guide us morally and spiritually. The Constitution and The Bill of Rights provide the framework for our government, our laws, and our freedoms. Any attempt to undermine these institutions we look at with contempt.
The attacks on conservatism have come fast and furious as of late. Now more than ever, we need a renewed self-awareness. There are plenty of individuals out there who at their very core are conservative, they just aren‘t aware of it yet. They have not yet taken the intellectual journey of self-discovery. These are the people we can reach out to and encourage to join the fight. To do so, we’ll need to be unified in our message and communicate our beliefs with more passion and conviction. We need a voice that defines and defends.
Limited Government
Conservatives concede to a higher power, yielding to natural law, and believing in an order greater than any man can dictate. Good and evil, right and wrong, justice and injustice exist independent of man’s interpretation and are clearly delineated. In our eyes, there are not many “gray areas.“ Our faith in God and our steadfastness to His Word provide the foundation for our actions and beliefs. For us, the words faith and family are not rhetoric, they portray our values and align our moral compass.
The purpose for which our government was established is not well understood by the masses. Many view it as an omnipotent force, operating on its own whim and existing above reproach. Still others consider it to be a crutch or a generous benefactor if you will. Conservatives see it for what it is, necessary to keep evil at bay. History has shown us that absolute power corrupts. Our Founding Fathers were well aware of this and thus introduced the three branches of our government: the Executive, the Legislative, and the Judicial. Each branch created to keep the other two in check. As conservatives, all we expect from our government is to guard our freedoms, guard us from our enemies, and get out of our way.
It is common knowledge that conservatives champion small government and lower taxes. Consequently, we adamantly object to our money being spent frivolously by over zealous congressmen. We welcome however, the most prudent use of our tax dollars, i.e., strengthening our military. Our philosophical stance is “peace through strength,” an ideology developed by Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu. President Ronald Reagan employed this same policy during both his administrations in the 1980s. Such an approach guarantees our economic and diplomatic power, protects our national interests around the world, and ensures our safety from our enemies.
As I’ve stated in the past, with freedom comes responsibility. Conservatives take full accountability for their lives. Ambitious and industrious, we are never in search of the proverbial “free lunch.” We are the producers. The fact that there will be winners and losers in life is not a difficult concept for us to grasp, for it is seen everywhere in nature. Our concerns center around freedom more so than equality. Government’s role, as our Founding Fathers thankfully knew, does not include social engineering via wealth redistribution. One is not truly free if forced by government to be tethered to those in society who know only how to consume.
The liberal, left-wing media would like us to think that conservatism in America is on its deathbed. They are relentless in their efforts to tear away at our moral fabric, “dumb us down,” and promote a socialistic agenda. It is now time for us, as conservatives, to dig our heels in even deeper.
Conclusion
Our values and beliefs lay on the strongest of foundations. As conservatives, we are bound by history and tradition. In fact, our ties run even deeper, to entities which are timeless. We believe in and empower ourselves as individuals. A bloated government is not the answer to any of life’s challenges.
Government, as we see it, exists only to perform in its limited role of upholding our freedoms and maintaining our sovereignty. Let us remind our brethren that the Declaration of Independence, states our inalienable rights. They are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. No where are entitlements mentioned.
Please share your conservative views with others. We need not just a voice, we need many voices to uphold and defend our beliefs, morals, and values. Our freedoms are at stake. You just might be surprised to find how many people actually are conservative at the core.
Please watch the following video, Ronald Reagan and Ron Paul are right. If you agree with their words, then YOU are conservative at the core.

Great post Jason…. It would serve the conservatives well to return to basics, to the genuine “politics of prudence” enshrined long ago in the writings of Edmund Burke and more recently in those of Russell Kirk, to time-tested principles that ensure personal liberty, encourage prosperity through free-market activity and provide for a robust common defense.
Have you considered the Constitution Party?

“Our faith in God and our steadfastness to His Word provide the foundation for our actions and beliefs.”
It seems like that statement covers a multitude of meanings. Firstly being that it perfectly describes not just the ignorance that can be hard-core american conservitism, but a parallel to radical islam. Who is to say what is right or wrong when the two are based soley off individual perception.
I am a conservative, and an atheist.
